Codes of Silence: Shirley Bruno, Aleesa Cohene, Caroline Monnet, Cauleen Smith
Until April 2, Richmond Art Gallery
Codes of Silence expands from Zoë Chan’s curatorial research into hybrid documentary practices where the voice is foregrounded for the expression of untold stories, collective identities and political causes — often with a link to marginalized communities. In contrast, the elimination of the voice is often associated with censorship or suppression. The four artists in this group exhibition radically overturn this illusory binary. Representing a range of aesthetics and approaches, each video features voices that are muted, obscured, withheld or unexplained in ways that cultivate quietness, interiority, intimacy and community.
