Grand Plié
Date: Wednesday, April 29, 2020
Time: 12:15 pm - 12:45 pm
Location: Online - www.facebook.com/RichmondArtsCentre
Admission: Free
Details:

Dancers -- and dance lovers -- of all ages and abilities are invited to celebrate International Dance Day by taking part in Richmond’s Grand Plié on Wednesday, April 29, a free online class hosted on the Richmond Arts Centre’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/RichmondArtsCentre.

In what has become an annual favourite, The Grand Plié will be led by Katherine Somody, a long-time ballet instructor at the Richmond Arts Centre. Katherine will lead a mini Ballet Barre class for all to enjoy from the comfort of home. No need for ballet slippers -- short socks will do fine -- and the back of a chair is a suitable substitute for a ballet barre (note: the recommended height is waist-level.)

Grand Plié participants are also invited to take part in the Grand Plié Selfie Challenge, by sharing photos of their participation on the social media platform(s) of their choice and using the hashtag #RichmondConnects.

In 1982, the International Theatre Institute (ITI) Dance Committee founded International Dance Day. It takes place every year on April 29 to celebrate the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (1717-1810), the creator of modern ballet. The Arts Centre began participating in this event six years ago with the creation of the Grand Plié which is scheduled on, or as close to, the official day as possible.

For more information on the Grand Plié or dance programs at the Richmond Arts Centre, contact Loryn LeGear at loryn.legear@richmond.ca or 604-247-8325.

Annual School Year Dance Recital
Each year in June, students from our dance and musical theatre programs perform in our annual school year recital held at the Gateway Theatre. These performances are the culmination of the students’ achievements for the year and are the highlight of our school year program.

Exhibition Opportunities
In addition to the Upper Rotunda of the Richmond Cultural Centre, Gateway Theatre, South Arm Community Centre, Thompson Community Centre and the Richmond Arts Centre have teamed up to provide exhibition opportunities for local Artists. The Arts Centre curates 2D exhibitions that are loosely connected to the themes of each individual theatre production. The exhibition is displayed in the lobby of the theatre. For more information visit our Community Art Displays web page.
